Girard '21 Howell Mountain Zinfandel
Exuding intense aromas of blackberry jam, baking spice, and hints of black pepper the nose is heady and enticing. Full-bodied and round on the palate with rich flavors of ripe blackberry, plum, milk chocolate and a hint of licorice, the glossy fruit and fine tannins lead to an exquisitely bold yet mouthwatering finish.
The growing season started with a wet January and February, then nearly no rain for the remainder of the season. The dry weather resulted in early spring budbreak, followed by early flowering, bloom, and fruit set. Calm spring and summer temperatures allowed for even veraison in July. Due in part to continued drought conditions the yields were naturally lower resulting in optimal ripening of intensely concentrated and very flavorful berries.
Sourced from vines planted in 1979 in the rugged terrain and volcanic soils of the Howell Mountain Appellation, this wine showcases intensity and complexity. The high elevation and cool evenings contribute a wide diurnal shift, resulting in longer hang time and slower ripening. The well-draining volcanic soils contribute to the unique flavor profile of this mountain-gown wine’s power and age-worthiness. Aged in French oak, 45% new, for 16 months.
