Girard '19 Calistoga Old Vine Valdiguié

Girard '19 Calistoga Old Vine Valdiguié

This wine is endowed with lively red fruit aromas of strawberry, raspberry, and cranberry with dusty earth and mineral aromas. The palate is lighter with softer tannins and refreshing red fruit flavors leading to a luxurious, though not overpowering, finish.

The year started out with ample rainfall which kept the soils moist and cool into spring. Summer was marked by warm, even daytime temperatures with few extreme heat spikes. The opportune weather conditions continued into late summer and fall. The harvest was of average volume, if not slightly below average and the fruit quality was exceptional; allowing us to craft wines with fresh acidity, texture, structure and finesse.

Valdiguié is a red wine grape grown in the Languedoc-Roussillon region of southern France, although this bottling is decidedly Californian in expression. The wine was aged in combination of Pinot and Rhône designated French oak. The wine is delicious now, and Winemaker, Glenn Hugo is confident it will age gracefully too.

Our Old Vine Valdiguié is sourced from the Greenwood Vineyard located just five minutes north of our Calistoga winery. The vines were planted in the 1960s and today may be one of the only (or last) Valdiguié vineyards in the Napa Valley.
